Turns out this preacher was not much of a friend of the dear departed and told the congregation that the deceased was going to HELL, and he also began deriding the congregation, telling them how evil and sinful they were.

That reminds me of a movie of Lars von Trier, "Breaking the Waves", where the community's standard sermon in a funeral was "You were a sinner and will find your place in hell." I think it used to be standard Calvinist practice or something like that.
