There were massive packet storm attacks on 2009-12-23 which took out UltraDNS servers across the internet and caused massive packet loss in routers across the Internet, especially in Europe (which suggests large Botnets running there). I have noticed and measured bursty packet loss of up to 28% on some routes since then, which suggests that some people are still playing DDOS games.
As a meta issue, the correct answer it DNS vulnerabilities is to run djbdns (refer cr.yp.to). Preferably on top of a stable LDAP (389 Directory Server). Pity that the easy to use management tools (Webmin/Simple Scripts/CPanel) don't support it natively.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg, 1999
