Our seven year old granddaughter Kylee is in the pediatric ICU at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City with bacterial pneumonia (Staph. A).
She's been there for four days now.
She's getting better, but it could take a while they said.
Too many tubes and hoses.......

Without effective antibiotics.... and hydration... and possibly oxygen she wouldn't have made it. We are very glad this technology was available for her and that it worked.

[Blunderov] My sympathies. Very worrying. (I remember the picture of her and her her electric sneakers with fondness.)
Staph is a nasty bug. But hopefully the worst is now over.

Gosh, she has gotten a lot taller since the last pictures I saw of her. I know she lights up your synapses and your neural readiness-to-fire in good ways. Thanks for sharing with us. Thank Dog for modern medicine.

Hey Walter,
all the best, ..... I know all to well as we watch our grandkids and worry. Here's to a solid recovery, so she can return to her duty of wrapping her granddad around her little finger.

I just wanted to thank you all for the kind words and update you as to Kylee's status.
I'll just copy and paste a summary update that I sent to family two days ago.
The summary below still reflects her status pretty much, and she continues to get better every day.
She is awake several hours per day now and writing to us and smiling (as much as anyone can smile with a ventilator tube down their trachea and a nasogastric tube down their nose and esophagus).
Again, thank you all for your concern.

Just wanted to update everyone.
Kylee is STILL in the pediatric ICU at Baptist in OKC,
BUT she is progressing well.
The doctors and nurses tell us this kind of pneumonia in children Kylee's age has an average hospital stay of 16 days, with a range of 9 to 30.
Pretty serious stuff, but she is well on her way to recovery.
She is still intubated (on a ventilator), under conscious sedation most of the time (kept asleep on purpose), has an NG tube (nasogastric tube for nutrition) and a central IV line for most everything else.
Oh, and did I mention a catheter for urinary output?
Sheeeeeeesh!
Today, she received a chest tube (an incision and tube into the pleural cavity which is the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall).
They did this because, while the infection in her lungs is almost healed by the IV antibiotic, bacteria sometimes take up residence in the pleural cavity in this type of infection.
As the bacteria are killed by the body's immune system and the antibiotics, their mean little carcasses and their waste by-products pile up in this pleural space, and need suctioning, which requires the chest tube for access.
This build-up is called empyema.
Sometimes, this empyema is too thick to be suctioned even with a chest tube, and a VAMI, or visually-assisted, minimally invasive type of thoracic surgery is required to manually debride and remove the empyema.
This would be the next step, but only if the chest-tube doesn't allow adequate access to the empyemic field for debridement and removal.
But that's possibly another day, and we won't worry about that yet! 
All in all, she's right on course.
If you want to call all that a course!
I'll keep you all informed as we move along.

Well, I would say I'm glad its all going to expectation, but that sucks, I wish she wasn't sick at all. Anyway, I know y'all are looking after her fine, and I'm sure the medical staff are comptetant or you would have noticed by now. So hang in there.

I finally have an update on my granddaughter Kylee that is ueber positive.
At day 15 in pediatric ICU, she is finally SANS intubation (ventilator), conscious sedation, NG tube (nasogastric tube), central IV line AND, last but not least, her urinary catheter!
All that is left is a little oxygen per a nasal canula and a BIG SMILE!
She should be discharged in a few days.

dear walter...i am glad that your granddaughter is doing well..i was horrified when i saw the first picture and relieved that she is doing better now. we have seen kylee from the time she was a wee little thing. she'll be healthy in no time...you'll see. keep us posted.

I'll update soon. (she's still hospitalized as of today--24 days in the hospital so far, but at least she is OUT of the pediatric ICU)
