Hah,
I doubt it, but I suppose it would be fun to see it prove positive. Good to see you around still causing trouble, DJ_dAndroid.

Quote from: MoEnzyme on 2008-08-15 22:21:40 ... Good to see you around still causing trouble, DJ_dAndroid. | Thanks! Short attention-span sometimes I guess, but I do try to pop-up like an ad once in awhile. And factor in all the boring to me BBS US/International political speak, and then I got thrown off by the recent site redirection: "site under construction" stuffs. Very glad that's all been fixed.
And on subject, I don't know about Bigfoot but how about the Chupacabra? Creepy! Maybe I'd camp occasionally if I didn't picture myself in a tent at 3-am leaping at every little sound. And eventually killing my girlfriend or someone with a big stick as they return from peeing, because I'm imagining we're about to be a Chupa-snack. Oh wait no, still not interested in camping because I'd be running from spiders all freakin' day, not to mention whining about everything especially the lack of a microwave and also the sunlight.
*sigh* I'm so dead when the zombies come.

Hey, anytime you want to break up the recent political intensities on the CoV, feel free. I welcome a break from that most times; a good diversion into less political yet scientifically interesting discussions sounds great to me.
Bigfoot IS one of the few oft-labeled "pseudo-science" stories which wouldn't surprise me a lot if validated. After all, according to fossil records, we have at least one time before shared the earth with another comparable-to-human intelligence animal . . . that being the now-extinct Neandertal. So if there is another human variant primate out there, we at least already have one proof of concept. Personally I think its a bit far out there that such a thing fitting that description remains as elusive as Bigfoot to at least minimal scientific confirmation, which is why I tend to think its false. But I'm certainly not giving it a hell no way.

PS. all the Chupacabra stuff I've seen, points to either to coyotes or coyote/dog hybrids. Perhaps some individuals of these categories seem more fantastical to spectators than others. I just remind people that while cotoyes may not be particularly pretty, aside from the show dogs there are some canis familiaris specimens that are so downright ugly they make coyotes look gorgeous by comparison. Hybrids between the two are not only possible but likely monstrous-looking enough in size and visage to inspire the Chupacabra mythology.

Vampire dog spotted in Texas A mysterious "vampire dog" blamed for a series of attacks on farm animals has been spotted by a police sheriff in Texas.

The corpse of a Chupacabra or vampire dog discovered in Texas:
The Chupacabra, which literally translates as Goat Sucker, has taken on legendary status akin to Bigfoot in Latino circles which has seen it appear in books and films including Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico.
It has previously been sighted as far south as Chile and Argentina and as far north as the US state of Maine, and similar animals have been described in Russia and the Philippines.
Its latest appearance was caught on a dashboard-mounted camera by deputy sheriff Brandon Riedel and his officer Ellie Carter in the town of Cuero, Texas.
"We were checking fences when this thing jumped out at us," Mr Carter said.
"I shouted: 'It's a chupacabra!' I recognised it instantly from TV. It had big teeth, a big head, short legs in the front and long legs in back."
In August last year, a chupacabra was blamed for the deaths of around 30 chickens on a nearby farm.
The animals were found drained of blood with two puncture marks in their otherwise uninjured bodies.
The farm's owner, Phylis Canion, claimed to have discovered the carcasses of three strange animals, one of which she preserved in her freezer before handing it over for DNA analysis.
The publicity from that attack saw T-shirts featuring the chupacabra shipped around the world, and there was talk of changing Cuero's mascot.
However, Texan scientists who investigated the case said the animal was likely to be a coyote, potentially crossed with a grey fox.

"Bigfoot" fails DNA test
Source: Reuters Authors: Clare Baldwin (Reporting, Palo Alto),Jim Christie (Writing), Mary Milliken, Peter Henderson (Editing) Dated: 2008-08-16
Bigfoot remains as elusive as ever.
Results from tests on genetic material from alleged remains of one of the mythical half-ape and half-human creatures, made public at a news conference on Friday held after the claimed discovery swept the Internet, failed to prove its existence.
Its spread was fueled by a photograph of a hairy heap, bearing a close resemblance to a shaggy full-body gorilla costume, stuffed into a container resembling a refrigerator.
One of the two samples of DNA said to prove the existence of the Bigfoot came from a human and the other was 96 percent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis.
Bigfoot creatures are said to live in the forests of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. An opossum is a marsupial about the size of a house cat. [ Hermit : Then again, I have seen some enormous "house cats." The largest I have known was a 42kg Thai Fishing Cat. I have seen some very large marsupial RUSSes*, but not that big (yet). However, if I wanted to believe (in bigfoot) as much as its supporters seem to, I could easily envisage a 42kg opossum as "possible" on the basis that no matter how improbable, opossums really do exist and the size of creatures follows a bell curve. Scientifically one is forced to acknowledge that the probability is infinitesimal, as structures don't scale and hiding the effect of large predator/scavengers is difficult. No matter how many bad movies are made about them. The best counter argument might be that if you caught a bigfoot and shaved it, it might well look and sound like John McSame. ]
Results of the DNA tests were revealed in an e-mail from Nelson and distributed at the Palo Alto, California, news conference held by Tom Biscardi, host of a weekly online radio show about the Bigfoot.
Also present were Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, the two who say they discovered the Bigfoot corpse while hiking in the woods of northern Georgia. They also are co-owners of a company that offers Bigfoot merchandise.
Despite the dubious photo and the commercial interests of the alleged discoverers, the Bigfoot claim drew interest from Australia to Europe and even The New York Times.
Biscardi said the DNA samples may not have been taken correctly and may have been contaminated, and that he would proceed with an autopsy of the alleged Bigfoot remains, currently in a freezer at an undisclosed location.

I kinda wouldn't have been surprised in either direction.
In an odd way I'm a little relieved that it's a fake. I would have been a little saddened that such a wonderful myth was finally solved and filed away.

If you didn't believe in el Chupacabra before now . . .
I'm betting the sources of the myth are domestic/wild hybrids. Some of the domestic specimens we have are far uglier than any wild canines. The words "butt-ugly" come to my mind for this one . . .
