Memo Reveals Sadaam-al-Qaida Tie Origin
Source: UPI Authors: Not Credited (UPI) Dated: 2007-04-06
A newly released Pentagon memo details the start of a year-long U.S. effort to prove a tie between Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida.
The memo, from then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz a few months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was aimed at convincing senior administration officials of the link as a need for war, the Los Angeles Times said Friday.
Addressed to Douglas J. Feith, the Defense Department's No. 3 official, Wolfowitz wrote little progress had been made in linking Saddam and al-Qaida and he asked for "a recommendation on how best to proceed." The conclusion was disputed by U.S. intelligence agencies then and has been discredited since.
Thomas Gimble, the acting inspector general of the Pentagon, criticized the project as improper but neither illegal nor unauthorized.
While much is already known, the full inspector general's report provides more detail about how it began.
