Found lurking, hoof in mouth, in a quiet backwater on the net

As a Conservative Republican, I believe in the marketplace to decide. It works for cable, there's no reason it can't work for broadcast TV, as well.

I think people are also rightly concerned about a small but vocal minority perverting the system to attempt to control what other people can or cannot see.

I mean, there were something like 350 complaints to the FCC in 2000. Now the FCC gets something like 1,000 times that many complaints or more in any given year. Is broadcast television 1,000 times worse than it was in 2000? Or are groups like the Parent's Television Council (which, at one time, was apparently responsible for 99.8% of the complaints the FCC received) perverting the process?

And even if all 350,000 of those complaints were about one particular show and were all legitimate, that's still a small percentage of the viewership of most shows.

CONSERVATIVE TV CRITICS RELIEVED BY RETURN OF ‘SOPRANOS’[/b

“Sopranos” premiere boosts TV violence statistics, fund raising for family values groups

“Pro-family” groups across the country praised the return of HBO’s grisly mob drama “The Sopranos,” saying it would help them to once again prove violence is ever more prevalent on American television. “If we can’t tell our members that Hollywood is exposing our children to even more violence than ever before, that ends up having a serious impact on our fund raising,” said Parents Television Council President Brent Bozell.

With the proliferation of reality competitions like “American Idol” and “Dancing with the Stars,” as well as serial dramas such as “Lost” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” conservative critics have had a harder time recently demonstrating that violence, which they contend harms children, is continually rising on American TV.

“After all the delays, I was worried ‘The Sopranos’ wouldn’t make it on the air this year and we wouldn’t hit our numbers by before May,” said Bozell. “But once again, the good Lord heard our prayers and provided us with an ultra violent show so we can continue our work to pressure Hollywood to stop harming our children with ultra violent shows.”

Based on the season premiere of “The Sopranos” alone, PTC is 70% of the way toward earning a grant from conservative financier Richard Mellon Scaife to keep up its work combating television violence. Bozell said he’s confident upcoming episodes of “The Sopranos” will continue to air brutally violent scenes that will get his group all the way to its fund raising goal.

With “The Sopranos” off the air last year, PTC had to count each separate airing of “South Park” on Comedy Central as separate depictions of violence on television to demonstrate violence was up yet again. If “The Sopranos” hadn’t returned, he said he would likely have started counting fighting in Iraq that airs on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel.

“For each of the past few years, Hollywood has made it harder and harder for us to prove that the entertainment industry is rotting our children’s minds and morality,” said Bozell. “But we will continue our good fight to demonstrate, by whatever means necessary, that violence on television is getting worse so we can continue to raise money to get violence off of TV.”

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg, 1999
