Climate change is happening (duh), but are we getting warmer or cooler? Is there any special significance to the changes? Are we going to be cooked - or be quick frozen - or will we just muddle through*? I'm one of those tending to think (but far from certain) that we will be seeing an ice-age real soon now, with a dramatic decrease in global populations unless we act to prevent it - but would like to be able to analyse a problem before attempting to fix it.
If, like me, you'd like to have better predictions and are running Windows on one or more computers, then joining the BBC's climate change experiment might be a good idea. Effectively they are running a distributed climate prediction model in an attempt to determine if small changes in what are thought to be climate determining factors actually are predictive, and if they are, to establish appropriate weightings for these factors in building climatic models. IMO a much better use of computer cycles than looking for alien intelligence or running a Microsoft screen saver.
