What the hell is up with these memes!?

A short and rather simple thread I had a thought over here. I have been noticing lately how many celebrities there are now days that have not done anything worth while for a long time but are still everywhere in the news because of their train wreck lives. A.K.A. Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, etc. So my question is why do we continue to watch these people ruin their lives? What is it that we as a society get from watching these people do stupid things? And is it a good or a bad thing that we continue to focus on these people? Why are these memes so addictive?

Any thoughts?

Easy, all the world loves a "morality tale" - and the USA, possibly more than other countries, appears incapable of resisting the inclination to sacrifice its heroes.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg, 1999
