...by the way...did anyone catch the amazingly brazen bs statement of laura
bush at the RNC saying something to the effect of; "i now introduce the
first president in the history of the united states to permit stem-cell
research...."  ?  of course they realize that the vast majority of
american morons wont realize that the option has never existed for any other
president.  how do they have the balls to attempt to use an issue which
their ignorant beliefs and bush's legislation have all but shut down, to
promote themselves?~!!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    shit like this
convinces me that i am NOT a partisan fanatic.  JOE DEES???....please try to
defend this statement by laura bush, i await your response.

I read today that damages due to the two hurricanes in the past month could surpass $40bn. Who is going to pay for this? Who *should* pay for this ideally?

good question..i suppose private property would have been insured by their owners...the state/federal funds should take care of the other damage?

Allstate is going to pay most of it.  We shorted it at 47.  We'll see what happens.

WASN'T THAI A MIGHTY STORM
Traditional; Arrangement by Tom Rush & Eric Von Schmidt
1997 MAPLE HILL MUSIC (BMI) ADMINISTERED BY BUG MUSIC

Chorus
Wasn't that a mighty storm
Wasn't that a mighty storm in the morning, well
Wasn't that a mighty storm That blew all the people all away

You know the year of 1900
Children, many years ago
Death came howling on the ocean
Death calls, you got to go
Now Galveston had a seawall
To keep the water down, and a
High tide from the ocean
Spread the water over the town

Chorus

You know the trumpets give them warning
You'd better leave this place
Now, no one thought of leaving
'til death stared them in the face
And the trains they all were loaded
The people were all leaving town
The trestle gave way to the water
And the trains they went on down

Chorus

Rain it was a' falling
Thunder began to roll
Lightning flashed like hell fire
The wind began to blow
Death the cruel master
When the wind began to blow
Rode in on a team of horses
T cried, "Death, won't you let me go".

Chorus

Hey, now trees fell on the island
And the houses give away
Some they strained and drowned
Some died in most every way
And the sea began to rolling
And the ships they could not stand
And I heard a captain crying
"God save a drowning man".

Chorus

Death your hands are clammy
You got them on my knee
You come and took my mother
Won't you come back after me
And the flood it took my neighbor
Took my brother too
I thought I heard my father calling
And I watched my mother go

Chorus

You know the year of 1900
Children, many years ago
Death came howling on the ocean
Death calls, you got to go

Chorus 2X

Tom Rush

...i guess i have to pay for someone to pump coloradoes water over the
mountains into L.A.?  but this truly is a question...when someone willingly
and knowingly builds and rebuilds their homes in the path of
hurricanes...and not completely hurricane proof...who should pay?  if they
didnt get relief, would they still build there out of sheer optimism?

I agree with you on this one Doc.

My friends in Puerto Rico  have poured concrete walls and roofs, and  when a big
storm comes along, they have a party, not insurance claims or FEMA hand
outs.

Florida is  behind the curve in new strong house construction.  What the hell are mobil homes doing in this state?  In new subdivisions,  Florida seems to focus on big, cheap, pretty housing.  Not, strong,  sensibly sized homes.

Yea..i have always wondered about that..why arent houses built out of concrete..i believe its some sorta of pressed cardboard that serves as room dividers? does it have something to do with insulation etc? flordia is the misshapen penis of america(it *is* shaped like a penis..check a map!)...out there..the only problem is humidity and hurricanes...shouldnt their construction be diff from the rest of the country that experiences white carpets? is it? if not, why?

when i build my house..it will have a central courtyard..with the skies above..and three floors up...and it will be made of brick, concrete and good old cement! any element of nature is welcome through the hole....its an open invitation!

[Blunderov] Where will this very pleasant sounding design be
implemented? Not, I hope, on the Florida Keys. Ever read the novel
'Hurricane' (John D MacDonald ISBN: B0000CJTQ7)?

(I've always enjoyed his work.) Apparently a proper force 5 hurricane
has winds strong enough to strip the bark off trees. He explores the
worst case scenario in which is the storm front landfall coincides with
a high tide in such a way as to produce a storm surge large enough to
reconfigure the coastline in substantial ways. Which, he points out, is
exactly what has been going on for aeons - the Keys are by their nature
transient.

He contrasts this phenomenon of nature with human nature; corner-cutting
and corruption in construction standards and practices in the name of
economic development lead to disastrous consequences when the storm
hits.

It was written a long time ago, and indeed I read it rather a long time
ago, so I'm going from memory but I think he does touch upon how, in the
outlying islands, the residents have simply adapted to living in a
hurricane zone. When they see the clouds forming they put rocks in their
boats a scuttle them in the rivers for later retrieval. Their dwellings
are designed to offer the least possible wind resistance and are located
in sensible places.

His descriptions of the forces that form and are unleashed in a
hurricane are awe inspiring. I'm very glad I've never been in one.
