The reason that David has not enforced a topic ban is that he himself opened the can of worms when he gave his blessing to a discussion of Michael Moore's agitprop piece, which was all about a particular and flawed view of those very banned subjects. It would be self- contradictory for him to swat floating genies after he himself uncorked the bottle - and I believe that he realizes this. --- To unsubscribe from the Virus list go to <http://www.lucifer.com/cgi-bin/virus-l>

A politician makes it into office by either convincing everyone to give up control over a portion of their lives to him or by forcing everyone to give up control or a combination of both.
If they convinced you, you've got to be crazy to “believe” anthing they or their supporters tell you unless you see it with your own eyes.
If they forced you, you've got toi be crazy not to resist them where at all possible.

Joe responds:
This point is no less applicable to Kerry and Moore than it is to Bush on the persuasion side, which is why I check into the facts behind the spin emanating from all quarters, and on the coercion side, it seems to be solely applicable to the Islamofascists. Just ask the Spanish, who must be crazy, because they acquiesced rather than resist.

Joe, I invite you to either point out the message in the archives where I gave this "blessing" or withdraw this allegation. --- To unsubscribe from the Virus list go to <http://www.lucifer.com/cgi-bin/virus-l>
David, an entire online chat discussion about Fahrenheit 9/11 was held about a week ago, at your suggestion, after Mermaid brought up the movie onlist. It was attended by several people here, and the transcript is in the chat archives. I will compliment you, however, on posting the URL to the Michael Moore fallacy list. It leads me to think that you saw what kind of emotion-manipulating demagogic propaganda the movie really was, and wished to discuss the mechanisms by means of which it attempted to manipulate people with the Virus cognoscenti, who were of course much too media and meme aware to be taken in by such transparent, clumsy and ham-handed devices. If such was indeed your intention, you must have been sorely disappointed, for instead most of what you got was a bunch of cheers for Michael Moore and his agitprop piece from the cluelessly or willfully manipulated among us.
it as still an invitation, placed on the mailing list by the list moderator, inviting list members to discuss the movie in a list-related venue. methinks you are claiming apples and oranges, but it is really Yellow Delicious and Goldrush (two species of apples).

I think you are confused, Joe. Political discussions are explicitly allowed on the IRC channel and the BBS (namely the Serious Business board) while being banned on the mailing list. Please re-examine your fruit.

(Joe) If that is indeed the state of affairs, and if you say it is then it is because as list moderator you possess the perpetual final say in such matters, then I will of course abide by it. I only request that you insist that others here do so as well, and this prohibition should, to be comprehensive and fair, include barbs and jibes and snarky snide asides, and even the droll digs placed in politically partisan sigs.

Sorry if this throw this off topic, I just saw that you owned the Ideoware domain. Is there some planned project you have for this domain? The domain name is interesting, and just caught my eye.

Hi Joe,
The film was/is topical. Inviting people to discuss it on IRC was a fair and good idea. I really think it is unfair to impugn David on this point, especially as he has shown astonishing levels of restraint and fairness with all of us.
Seeing as though topic bans etc do not seem to have worked in limiting these ugly rows, I plan to act in the following way as a personal contribution to possible solutions:
Where articles or posts or replies of a politial or devisive type are posted, I will not enter into discussion (inflame or start a row), but simply register my disapproval with a simple reply - "I wish this had not been posted".
This negative action will be balanced by a commitment to comment on and discuss the many superb contributions made by our fellows on this board.
Kieth is right about the phenomoenon of quality posts getting no response. We need to be aware of that.
Where a fellow on this list post more than 200 words of their own writing, on any topic, I will personally try and make sure that I respond. osts
I hope some others will try some variations on this too. Ignore and register disaproval of needlessly divisive posts (especially copy and paste jobs or personal attacks). Comment on and encourage the right sort of posts (for me this is good original commentary and links to quality tools resources, articles or information).
I hope this addresses Keiths attention problem whilst allowing us to enjoy a common good by directing our natural but unpleasant political effluent away from our main online presence (the list).
