I've subscribed to TimesSelect for the last couple of years and found it well worth
the $49/year price. It's now free to everyone online.

A Letter to Readers About TimesSelect
Dear NYTimes.com Readers:
Effective Sept. 19, we are ending TimesSelect. All of our online readers will now be able to read Times columnists, access our archives back to 1987 and enjoy many other TimesSelect features that have been added over the last two years – free.
If you are a paying TimesSelect subscriber, you will receive a prorated refund. We will send you an e-mail on Wednesday, Sept. 19 with full details.
Why the change?
Since we launched TimesSelect in 2005, the online landscape has altered significantly. Readers increasingly find news through search, as well as through social networks, blogs and other online sources. In light of this shift, we believe offering unfettered access to New York Times reporting and analysis best serves the interest of our readers, our brand and the long-term vitality of our journalism. So the idiots finally figured out their readership (like me who refuses to click on an NYT link) had departed. Like Iraq, this is naturally not even slightly their own fault. Here it is because the Internet is changing... of course. Amusingly enough, the NYT is again apparently far behind the news, because their move is happening just in time for Google et al to start quoting Reuters et al directly, rather than via newspapers.
I wish that the NYT had remained "exclusive" till they went out of business, as we will almost certainly see a series of weighty pro-war articles by their pompous, neocon oriented opinionistas, cut and pasted verbatim into our forums by the same brain damaged half-wits as whine about the non-existent-except-in-their-imaginations "liberal press".
Thanks for the warning Walter, keep your head down!

I've cut and pasted quite a few NYTimes articles, including op-eds, into our forums over the years, but nary a one that I remember was authored by pro-war neocons nor remotely right-wing.
