...ok, today when i plugged it in i heard for the first time some
sounds...beeps actually.  they were very low in volume...not the normal
loud beeps heard when the machine is booting up as usual.  they were 3 long
beeps lasting about 1.5 seconds each with an interval of about 1/3 of a
second.  each three beep set was then followed by approx. 11 seconds of
silence and then the beeps would repeat...this pattern continued until i
shut it off(unplugged it).  is this some sort of code for something?  pray
tell if you have an idea.  thanks much!! = )

I think the most amount I got in one day was about 54. I still get them
constantly. They just keep on rolling in. But they have been slowly down, I
must admit that much. Now they have cut down to only a few a day, which is
good.

It depends on who the manufacturer of your BIOS is. This informations used to be the first thing that appeared on your screen after starting the computer. Most BIOSes out there are made by Award these days.

Here is a couple of pages with BIOS beep codes. If you remember who made your BIOS, you can try to match it up.

I'm not an expert on viruses or anything, but I read someone on a message board that when your computer beeps, it sometimes means that a hacker is in yoru computer or is trying to. It also said something about the mouse flickering around. I'm not exactly sure if this is true or not, all I remember is reading that on a message board.

Note: Remember, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I jus tthought I might throw this information in there. Hopefully its not a hacker, and is something which can be fixed. I hope you get it to work...I'll also look for the page where I saw that information and see if I can find it.

...ok, now it runs as usual...but still no screen, no beeping, and no
apparent computer activity 'behind' the darkened screen.  usually i would
have to first input my password...so when i do this or anything else, i
still hear no activity or sounds.  should i tear my girlfriends computer
apart and see if her vid card works?  is it that simple?  she has an old
machine.  any new ideas?

...thank you for your time pedro, but the beeping is something that is
happening when it turns on...a BIOS way of communicating something very
basic like, "sumthin's broke".  this is my first time actually manhandling
my computers guts, so it's a bit of an educational venture for myself as
well.  a few resident experts here have been giving me some very helpful
info already.  thanks though.

What type of BIOS do you have?  There should be a chip next to your computer batter (a 2032 battery) that should say some type of name on it.  Like Pheonix, Award, or something like that.  If you find that, finding the problem with your computer should be no problem.

Mine beeps like that when the videocard is not working right.  Most motherboards that I have ever used has used the Award Bios.

Good luck!
