AOL is blocking all mail sent from lucifer.com with this message 550 DIRECT CONNECTION FROM DIAL-UP OR DYNAMIC-IP DENIED
Needless to say, the server is not a dial-up or dynamic-ip. The IP is 209.115.169.3 and the reverse DNS resolves to javien2-3.spots.ab.ca. Any suggestions?
David

David, Remember my own little "email address" problem from a couple of years ago. I think you were in the loop on it with Hermit.
Note the date: Two days after 9/11/2001.
Mass hysteria!!!
Walter PS--I hope you have better luck with AOL than I did with Tulsa.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- Original Message -------- Subject: virus@lucifer.com list mail FILTERED BY TULSA.COM--HELP Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 16:32:15 -0500 From: Walter Watts <walwatts@tulsa.com> Reply-To: walwatts@tulsa.com Organization: "The Future's so Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" To: virus <virus@lucifer.com>
Hermit,
I'll finish reading and responding to your post on your experience with an Arab family over the next day or two. Cecelia and I lived in Khamis Mushayt, SA, just about 100 miles SW of Mecca in 1983. At the moment, though, I've got something quite different to deal with that I've got to decide a course of action.
It appears the domain that hosts my email account http://www.tulsa.com has suddenly decided to filter mail from virus@lucifer.com
I called this morning and talked to the wife of the owner of the domain, who, when I told her of my lack of list mail for 36 hours from virus@lucifer.com, replied: "who would want email from such a domain"...."sounds like devil worship to me"
When I tried to explain in an intelligent way that it was purposefully named to repel people of low intelligence and mytho-literal bents, she continued to ask more questions of the type of things discussed in the forum.
I tried to explain, but eventually she asked "don't you people believe in god"
Before the words "basically no" had escaped my lips, I heard the words "I'll pray for you".
I continued to probe the whereabouts of my email, and several scenarios were introduced by her, but all in a "we didn't change anything tone".
1) could be in virus box, maybe because of originating domain name
2) something else triggered a filter
and anyway, her words kept ringing "who would want mail from that domain anyway"?
So now I'm faced with several choices: (after verifying with David McFadzean that I'm still really subscribed)
BTW--this is not my ISP, only my email host.
1) blow 'em off and use either one of my @cox.net email addresses or one of my @walterwatts.com emails.
2) fight 'em--they host one really large website that I originally put up (and with a little effort could probably get moved)
3) any ideas???

It's easy. The dumfucks have decided to validate that the mail "sent from address" is valid by implementing a reverse DNS look-up on connection (and what that will do to their multiply fucked-up DNS system is anybody's guess - mine is that it will not be pretty to watch). You should be able to validate this quite trivially by monitoring the DNS log while initiating a manual connection from a non-existent host. If this analysis is correct, you should see their queries hit the name server.
The ideal solution is that the system running the MTA should spoof "lucifer.com" and any in-addr.arpa should resolve to the same. You can do this trivially (or I can help) using djbdns' wall (see djbdns @ http://cr.yp.to. The alternative, if you don't have control of your reverse domains would be to set the MTA to send from javien2-3.spots.ab.ca.
I'll log in on IRC either tonight or tomorrow evening to discuss further if needed.
Kind Regards
Hermit

See also the appended file, lucifer.txt (added to my previous message) and the one I will attach to this message after it hits the list, luciferarpa.txt, which contain all the name server references affecting the resolution of your mx records. These are the results of running:
> dnstrace mx lucifer.com a.root-servers.net > lucifer > dnstracesort < lucifer > lucifer.txt
and
> dnstrace ptr lucifer.com a.root-servers.net > lucifer > dnstracesort < lucifer > luciferarpa.txt
(Refer http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/debugging.html). This suggests that there are some latent troubles with your DNS setup (notice especially the varying timing data which will give some bind based resolvers kittens). If you still have a Windows system (Apologies to them, after posting this to the list, I see that they have migrated their product (which has my unreserved approval) to both Linux and FreeBSD - which just makes a great product even better) , I suggest you download the QuickDNS trial at http://www.menandmice.com/5000/5000_downloads.html and double check your namespaces.
Kind Regards

I confirm that for the last few days I haven't recieved any email from the virus list. I have been considering giving AOhelL the heave-ho for quite some time, and I believe that this is the final straw for me. As I work out the switch I may be out of touch for a while. Also, I have broken my arm in a car wreck on friday, so that is also slowing me down a lot on my keyboard. All things considered I will probably be effectively offline for a few weeks. So until then y'all will have to write in my viewpoint for me. I'll let you know how good a job of simulating me you have done on my return.
Love,
-Jake
