virus: Reading List for Katie

Possibly a reading list recommendation is in order. There is also a recommended list at http://www.lucifer.com
Here's a reading list for you, Katie. There is no shortcut to finding your "own" path. Just remember the journey is EVERYTHING. The destination eludes us "all", and that's ok since, if you're riding a train from New York to San Francisco and you're in St. Louis, who cares what the ice cream flavor of the day is in San Francisco.
Please visit us often at CoV.
Sincerely, Walter <King of the byzantine metaphor>
My top 6 (in order of impact to me personally), read before I was so fortuitously introduced to CoV.
1) Mythology’s Last Gods, William Harwood, Prometheus Books 2) Darwin's Dangerous Idea : Evolution and the Meanings of Life, Daniel Dennett, Touchstone Books 2.5) At Home in the Universe, Stuart Kauffman (recommended after I got here) 3) Consciousness Explained, Daniel Dennett, Little Brown & Co. Books 4) Wrinkles in Time, George Smoot, Avon Books 5) The Demon-Haunted World : Science As a Candle in the Dark, Carl Sagan, Ballantine Books 6) The Whole Shebang : A State-Of-The-Universe(S) Report, Timothy Ferris, Simon & Schuster Books
Books I have read that were recommended by fellow virians, in order of impact to me personally:
1) The Lucifer Principle, Howard Bloom 2) The Extended Phenotype, Richard Dawkins 3) The Feeling of What Happens, Antonio Damasio (I'm a big consciousness freak) 4) The Elegant Universe, Brian Greene 5) Time's Arrow & Archimedes' Point, Huw Price 6) The Time Before History, Colin Tudge 7) The Meme Machine, Susan Blackmore
An Intimate History of Humanity, Theodore Zeldin
And just for fun and to observe applied science put to work: 9) The Making of the Atomic Bomb, Richard Rhodes
And to see NASA play the comedian to ESA's straight man: 10) The Hubble Wars, Eric Chaisson
You've probably noticed there is a slight "astronomy" bias in my list, the reason being I'm an amateur(with a capital a) CCD astrophotographer.
Best to ya........
Walter
