Teens Accused of Concocting Poison Slush

Apr 23, 10:11 am ET

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Three teenage girls face attempted murder
charges after several Canadian students fell ill and were rushed to
hospital when they shared a slush drink laced with poison, police said
Tuesday. Two girls in the west-central Alberta vacation community of
Sylvan Lake were arrested and a warrant was issued for another accused
of the poisoning, which apparently targeted one student but sickened
seven, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

The Mounties said officials at H.J. Cody School in Sylvan Lake reported
last week that seven girls, aged 14 and 15, were taken to hospital after
consuming the crushed-ice drink, purchased at a convenience store. They
were treated and released.

Investigators learned the chemical compound, copper sulfate, was meant
for one student and the others -- including two of those charged --
drank it inadvertently.

A police spokesman declined to give any details about a possible motive.
All those involved are said to know each other.

The copper sulfate, which can cause nausea, headaches and rashes, was
taken from the school after a science experiment on April 10, police
said.

The three accused girls face charges of attempted murder and
administering a noxious substance. Their first court appearance is set
for May 1 in Red Deer, Alberta.
