Congratualtions from the Rohs. I had planned on that middle name for my own girl - you chose a beautiful name all the way around. Way to go!

Congratulations and jubilations!
And there's nothing wrong with the Teletubbies. They are quite soothing.
Also, better get her into martial arts young. With a name like that, lovely as it is, she may have need of some ass-kicking skillz when forced to mix with the ignorant masses.

Dear Hermit and Tina,
A little bit late on this, but Tywick told me the news last week.
Congrats, and I'm sure we all (all of us going to Iowa next month that is) can't wait to see her. As for what Michelle said about enlisting her in martial arts as well as ballet (or whatever)-- I agree. ***makes a mental note to include baby barbells and baby punching bag with the other gifts to bring***

To all of you who took the trouble to reply, our thanks (Note to David Lucifer - I suspect that if she attempts to live up to her live namesake (while avoiding Plato :-) ), she will do well at the "Virian Virtues".)
For those concerned about the "Teletubbies", we don't have either antennae or cable for our video system, and I don't intend to acquire one. The "virtue" of the TV as an "automated pacifier" seems to me to come with some rather serious strings attached. Not least, that I am unsure of my own ability to resist the propaganda it delivers were I to pay attention to it, so I certainly won't expose a relatively acceptive infant mind to its dubious memeplexii. As Hypatia (of Alexandria) put it, "Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fancies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child-mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after-years relieved of them. In fact, men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth - often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you can not get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable." Given that TV seems to me more related to the manufacture of myth than "living truth", we will avoid it until she is properly equipped to deal with such. :-)
For those concerned about her physical well-being, granted the "burden" of her names in a society so myth-ridden that it cannot take Hypatia's advice (supra), her namesake's father's program for her upbringing seems fitting: "Theon set out to produce a perfect human being; ... he nearly succeeded. Hypatia was five feet nine, and weighed one hundred thirty-five pounds. This when she was twenty. She could walk ten miles without fatigue; swim, row, ride horseback and climb mountains. through a series of gentle calisthenics invented by her father, combined with breathing exercises, she had develped a body of rarest grace." (Source for quotations of and about Hypatia : http://poly.polyamory.org/~howard/Hypatia/Hubbard_1928.html). In Hypatia Lucifer Natalia's case (after careful consideration, we swapped the first two names on her birth certificate, allowing her to "hide" Lucifer from a society of bigots if she so chooses), I hope that she will engage in fencing (probably epee as female saber is not yet widely accepted, and epee is more useful than foil as training for defensive situations (and has a lot less competition than foil)), along with Yoshinkan and Shidokan. She will certainly be exposed to all three disciplines at a very early age, and if she does choose to continue with some or all of them, should end up more than competent to provide those who resort to personal violence a valuable lesson in humility.
Kind Regards
Hermit
PS Apropos of the meeting at the Hermit Haven (in SE Iowa) next month, I will post a formal invitation in a day or two to those Virians who hadn't heard about it (on IRC) and would like to visit (week-end 2003-05-23), but in the meantime, consider yourselves invited.
