[letheomaniac] New! From the kind of people who name breathtaking atmospheric phenomena 'diet-sprites', a botanical name that conveys the majesty of Mother Nature in all her glory: the No Parking tree...

New species of tree is named after No Parking sign

Lynton A new species of tree found in a rural lay-by has been officially named “No Parking” after the sign once nailed to its trunk.

The rare Sorbus No Parking is a type of whitebeam. The 80-year-old specimen in Lynton, Devon, was found to be a new species in the 1930s and given the informal nickname “No Parking” in the 1980s.

But now the National Museum of Wales has made the title official. Julian Gurney, the National Trust warden for the area, said: “I’m glad that’s all the sign said – it could have ended up being called ‘caution speed bumps’ or ‘no fouling’.”

[letheomaniac] Apparently its Latin name is 'Sorbus admonitor'. I imagine 'admonitor' means something like 'admonish' or 'tell off'. Poor thing.

[Hermit] You are precisely correct. Admonitor is to tell off, warn off or admonish. But spare your sympathy for those who ignore its warning and fall prey to the meter maids of either sex. In this town, the previous meter maid was also the town prostitute. The current incumbent does not like to be asked questions about this :-)

Kindest Regards

These 2 posts leave me absolutely distraught;

Why one of Earth's precious children get labeled once removed from an automobile dysfunction, a known killer of the planet and, .... and ... well ... how a venerable prostitute could sink to be a meter maid ... I'm aghast. Just the one you say in town, Meter Maid ?

Cheers

Fritz

PS: thx you two, yet another word for my diminishing mind to remember and use: Admonitor
