....ok....so i was pretty much full of shit in my synopsis. youre right, it
was a very complex issue..dont think i didnt realize that, as i was writing
my gut-response, many such questions arose in me..i suppose it was my
instinct to merely "publish" that inspired my hitting 'send' action:):)
haha. in truth, your better explanation highlights the true quandries with
such an issue: e.g. elimination of idealistic acceptance of 'other cultures'
etc...not meaning the classic Politically correct interpretation, but the
issues of "at what point are 'we' forced to forcibly regulate other nations
or groups technological status or advancement considering their overall
value systems and the likelyhood of those systems severely contradicting
those promoting personal freedoms(supposedly those of the usa) or other
rather sensible claims to human liberty.

....in short, combining the modern and very available technological know-how
with the vast quantities of nutso extremist organizations and other
desperate factions of humanity(reasonable or otherwise), some severe choices
are going to have to be made.

...either free information and see what happens or restrict it and invite a
governmental police state.

...of course, neither will happen. with close to 7 billion people, 6
billion of which are either starving, illiterate, or pre-natally fucked up
etc. we will have a mixture of the two for some time eventually declining
towards total fuckitude and chaos until we either manage to find and
colonize other planets(several of them, unlikely as that may seem) or
finally balance out our global checkbook with regards to
population/education/logistics. the latter of course would require such
huge efforts that i dont think it's gonna happen for at least 900 years
thanks to religion....or lack of education(pretty much one in the same)

[sebastian] - "...what's this crap about bush trying to 'contain'
technological research
which might be applied to the creation of weapons of mass destruction?"

It is a very old protocol my friend. The official name for the program is
"Dual Use Technology". Pasteurisation is one. Milk needs to be pasteurised
to kill harmful bacteria, but only to a relative low degree of accuracy do
you need to regulate this temperature. If I refined the pasteurisation
process to regulate the temperature of a 10,000 litre vat to within a tenth
of a degree Celsius and could maintain that temperature indefinitely or
change the temperature of those 10k litre of "culture" at high rates with
precise accuracy, I would have a technology necessary to manipulate DNA or
proteins or bacteria. A technology not needed in third world starving
countries. A technology not needed in the mideast, by any country. So when
the intelligence community gets report of major pharmaceutical companies
making extensive sales of industrial biological processing equipment for the
purposes of making milk (the milk factory scenario) we tell the Department
of Defence to bomb the living shiite out of the "claimed" milk factory.

Your perspective is naive here Sebastian. Understand this, there are
extremist org's that will exploit the seeming innocuosness of certain
technologies to camouflage malevolent intent. Milk factories are the
preferred wolf in sheep's clothing for biological weapon factories.

The greater perspective in this issue is not a person's inalienable right to
technological self determination, but that person's need to have access to
"appropriate technology" necessary to fulfil their sustenance needs and self
actualisation needs in a society that does not threaten either their
existence or the existence of other cultures through the misuse of "Dual Use
Technology."

If individuals want to learn microbiology, they can do so with materials and
quantities found in the pharmacy, not in the warehouse.

But, what the Smirking Chimp is talking about is something TOTALLY
Different.

He is forwarding the broad general interpretation of the EAA to include all
manners of personal privacy technology, vis a vis encryption software and
firmware, so as to deny the use of privacy enabling technology from foreign
peoples. The tacit assertion in this argument of the Scrub is that only the
government of america is entitled to ultimate privacy, not other peoples,
not other governments, not even the citizens of america. this conservative
agenda of "Uncle Thought Police" knows best is very, very scary. He would
deny us through the EAA the protection of the 9th amendment of the
Constitution of the United States of america. For those of you not familiar
with the Ninth Amendment, briefly, it states that the government shall not
make any laws that deprive the citizens of any rights not stated as
alienable in the constitution to the necessity of effecting a just
government, specifically the right to privacy. What the smirking chimp wants
is a return to McCarthyism, where the governmental agencies of police have
direct access to our private communications. It is bad enough that just
about anyone attached to the ISP can snoop on mail packets. But what the EAA
and similar legislation's set the stage for are the unrestricted access to
all technologies of privacy mediation.

Seb, you have underdifferentiated your arguments once again. There are two
primary concerns afoot in your locution. They are only associated through
the accident of chronemic consanguinity. Try not to fan the flames of
dispassionate disinterest with such disinformation bordering on counter
rhetoric. Return to the ways of the diacritical discourse my friend. Make
your assertions neatly and follow up with like logic and critique.

p.s. so that you can feel on equal footing as the pox toting criminal. all
you need to get some anthrax culture is a dead sheep from montanna and a
couple of petri dishes. And of course the stomach and skill not to kill
yourself in the harvesting there of. The Department of Agriculture reports
on cases of anthrax in livestock inside the contiguous 48 states. That way
you know where to go to get some. It is EXTREMELY easy to harvest from the
animal, although requiring it's death, and even easier to grow. Ask any
biology major. And lest we not forget our european heritage, the portugese
and psaniards routinely brought the pox with them intentionally to the new
world. The Mississippi Nation numbered over 30 million prior to the Papal
Inclyclical that allowed "exploration" of the upper continent. Three years
afterward, that population was less than 500,000. It is part and pacel of
our proud american heritage. - k.
