The idea of the death of god is particularly associated with FriedrichNietzsche who saw this event as necessitating a re-evaluation of all values. However, nineteenth century society reacted in a number of differing ways to the theories of natual selection propounded by Charles Darwin
and a number of figures such as GeorgeEliot and Matthew Arnold developed differing responses.
