The idea of the death of god is particularly associated with [FriedrichNietzsche] who saw this event as necessitating a re-evaluation of all values. However, nineteenth century society reacted in a number of differing ways to the theories of natual selection propounded by [CharlesDarwin] and a number of figures such as [GeorgeEliot] and Matthew Arnold developed differing responses.
