If we (U.S.), as individuals and as a nation, are unable to understand and adhere to our own societal network protocols ('rights', treaties, contracts, etc.), we cannot expect to long survive as a viable network, nor to win the symbiotic incorporation of other 'more primitive' human soceital networks into our own.
