Actually, DJ Shadow is a very well known dj among trip hop and hip hop fans. He's star status has skyrocketed with his remixes of other artist's music, in addition to, his excellent discography.
DJ Shadow's first solo project, Endtroducing DJ Shadow, was released in 1996. Great album, by the way. But it was in the early 90's that he gained prominence as a producer/remixer. He's worked with prominent hip hop artists, such as, DJ Krush, Lateef, and Blackalicious.

I suggest you buy one of his albums, if for no other reason than to have a quality album by a great musician/producer.
