"It would be interesting to see what those numbers had to say about the death toll of the ideal of democracy"
I'm still not sure that democracy can be considered in the same manner, if only because the basic concept does point to a recognition of plural points of view rather than a single absolutist ideology. Which isn't to say that democracy cannot become closely imbricated with nationalism (it demonstrably can), but simply that it seems imprecise to consider it in the same category as Stalin's allotrope of communism or fascism.
My more general reservation with the analysis provided was that it does yoke cause and effect together by force i.e. when divided by population the death toll is evenly spread therefore any cause can potentially have the same effect, a conclusion reached without any analysis of the causes themselves.
