"I wish we had those numbers."

Joe made some interesting comments at the time, which are as follows:
I did note that in just about every case of mass murder in the 20th
century, whether inspired by religion or political ideology, the
omnipresent element was the existence within, and even the
domination, at least in one of the major institutional combatants,
and usually the aggressive one(s) if not more, of a utopian ideal
that required the subservience of the present, and of those people
residing with it, including those who did not share such an ideal, to
a single imagined and fervently desired future.
Secualr participatorty democracy with the church/state separation
principle esconsed within it, by expressly permitting a multiplicity
of differing utopian ideal, or none at all, by its citizens (freedom
both of and from religion), and forbidding coercion between these
ideals, seems to be resistant to such a subservience of the other,
for there is no single utopic ideal extant in such a system in the
name of which such subserviation could be justified. The question
is whether such a system, founded upon the three bases of equal
rights, individual freedom and social tolerance, can survive in an
enviromnemt including and protect itelf against global fanatical
mono-utopic movements. The answer is, only if its individuals
value, and are willing to collectively defend, their own rights to
equality, freedoms from interference and freedoms to differ and be
equally tolerated in their pursuit of a multiplicity of differing utopias
as much as the most virulent of the competing mono-utopias
values, and is willing to aggress for the sake of, its single ideal.
