It has contained that phrase since the McCarthy anti-godless-communist
phase, in 1954, so I doubt if there are many active military who joined
before then. But if you had ever been in the military, you would know that
the military pledge one takes to swear in and join a US military service is
not the Pledge of Allegiance.
Having been one, which you most obviously haven't, I can honestly tell
you - very few US citizens, outside the chaplaincy, join the military with
the intention of doing God's work; if they were inclined that way, they
would join their church denomination's missionary organization. Not only
are there a lot of different religions in the US military, and many who
follow none, but most US soldiers are fighting for either a nation (the US)
or a paycheck, and although very few would betray their government for a
bribe, they think more about getting better at their jobs, getting promoted,
and being able to give themselves and their families more as a result,
rather than the patriotism aspects, which run heartfellt and deep, but are
not usually 'worn on the public sleeve'. It is a career, and the ones who
choose to stay in that career and make a life of it rather than getting out
and going to college, as I did, are proud of how good they are at it, like
most people are concerning whatever career they choose.

In the US, the emphasis has traditionally been placed upon fighting for
one's freedom and the freedom of one's countrymen, family and friends,
and for the preservation of the system of government that majes these
freedoms possible.
