As DeMan suggested, the problem with metaphor is that it displaces the object of its attentions every bit as much as it brings it closer, which leaves me concerned that we are still speaking of a floating signifier. Bear in mind that ambiguity is a great deal more desirablein 'literary language' than it is in other contexts, which were more what I had in mind (the religious aspects thereof being mainly to the foreground).
