Actually, I think the author of the book in question is female.
Irregardless, I fail to see how the way in which the candy is "viewed"
in Britain can have any effect on the true history of the candy.
(also note that the story as told only implies that bent white sugar
sticks were used in Europe -- the colour didn't get added until much
later)
