As the gene has been credited with the whole of
"evolution" the concept seems ready for an
overthrow (and "meme" seems a good candidate). A
*meme* is what "bathes" a developing embryo... a
"gene" is externalized as prohibitions against
certain un-adaptable growth processes: The meme
provides a blueprint for *adaptable* ones! The
idea of "progress" (as contrasted from
"evolution") is a good distinction to make as
regards the progress of memetic ordering and the
"evolution" of non-adaptable genetic mutations.
