True , it is impossible to say where we would be until we get there,
but after only 500 years after the end of the dark ages mankind has
explored as far as Neptune. As progress is a function that depends on
past progress, this tends to make it grow exponentially. I really do
think an extra 1000 years of progress would have put mankind out among
the stars.
I don't think it is important for a nation to be composed of atheists
so much as it is to have a nation of people free to think for themselves
and come to their own conclusion. Ants may tug on a piece of food in a
bunch of different directions but they still manage to get it down into
the hole.
