I've heard of people that grew up without ever learning to speak, until
they were found by government workers. I don't know if any studies
were done on them, to see what kind of skills they developed to cope.
People were more interested in teaching them to speak, so we could
talk to them. I think a case was mentioned in Pinker's _Language Instinct_.
