There was a big hoohaa about this over here many
years ago. Based on book called The Myth of God
Incarnate. More recently, a bishop in the Church of
England said that the virgin birth and the resurrection
were to be understood as symbols (or something to
that effect). I get the impression such thinking is the
norm at theological colleges and such, and it's only
when they get into the mass media that anyone gets
upset -- and I think the only ones that get upset,
apart from a relatively small number of fundamentalists,
are people who think it's OK for educated people, but
the common herd has to be kept in line using the old,
tried methods, ie old-fashioned, authoritarian religion.
Because it's hard to build a power-base on metaphors.
It's all political, you know!
