I think a lot of people understand (intuitively if not consciously) that
in order to have a meaningful life they must have an effect on the
world and history. Children are obviously an effective way to pursue
that goal because, if all goes well, they eventually generate their own
meaning and children, ad infinitum.

If you look at the reasons underlying our actions, and the reasons
behind those reasons, eventually you will find that all actions are
selfish. But why would you say having children is the "most selfish"?
