The latter is the archetype for the psychopath-- and the mad scientist.
(in art and literature) and the many man/machine hybrids found in gothic
literature. Since they usually get their castles burned down by angry
villagers, I think it is safe to say that there are plenty of memes that
support the first type of scientist.
