Consciousness separable from the brain/body? In human terms it seems to be
out of the question - are you talking about a soul? Then again, an extension
of our evolutions is reflected in our technology. If Artificial Intelligence
(AI) reaches it's ultimate development, then your question might be answered
in the affirmative. Would that be nature though?

Human evolution is waiting for a beneficial mutation. Without a radical
environmental (global) shift the changes (if they are occuring) are too
small to be detected and our exacting documentation of human phsyiology is
too young to document changes, we're still trying to observe variances
already exixting. The dangerous compounds (unnatural) that we are releasing
into the environment (cannot be broken down by nature) might result in a
devolution of the human gene. We are altering the earth faster than
evolution can adapt to. Thus we are Doomed! Bring out your dead...
