I think your impressions are misleading. I wouldn't characterize the question so much as one of programming (genetic or otherwise), as much as recognizing and understanding to the limitations the medium we are embedded within.
And as far as resignation to it goes, I'd say that mine falls in the same catagory as that exihbited in this quote from Howard Bloom, which you also include:
