Late last year, the Clinton administration, with high profile Republican support, announced that the Federal Government would spend $2 BILLION over the next 5 years to produce and air a propaganda spots in support of the governments War on Drugs. The BBC reports:
Some of the country's best known advertising agencies have joined forces to produce the five-year campaign - using sophisticated techniques from television and Hollywood.
Drug Czar, Barry McCaffrey, expressed his hopes that media organizations would integrate the government campaign into their editorial policies rather than just airing the anti-drug message as paid advertisements. This is a profoundly frightening suggestion, but I have heard no mainstream journalist or news organization even raise a concern over this suggestion.
