oi (racial hate music)
...just to clarify, Oi! is not racial hate music, Oi! Started with
bands like Sham 69 and Blitz which brought about a fusion of punk
rock and the sort of rockabilly sensibility present in the British
teddyboy scene.
...but as an example of a pernicious meme, the co-option of skinhead
culture (which evolved out of multiracial interactions between mostlywhite
british working class youth and rude-boys (jamaican, working
class immigrants) and grew out of the first wave of ska music brought
to the UK with Jamaican immigrants.
...this co-option originated with the British National Front (which
has always utilized the poverty and frustration of the working class
to further its specifically racist ends) as it recognized the
potential for recruitment with a nationalistic working class youth
culture. The sterootyped association between skinhead culture (which
is a valid expression of a distinct cultural style and class
awareness) and bonehead culture (which is a particular image fostered
by white-supremist hate groups because of its hard edges and
intimidation factor) and further propagated by thinly disguised
propaganda films like Romper Stomper (australia) and American History
X (U.S.)
