The Sovereign Nation of Alaska

Certainly a question about Sarah Palin's patriotism if ever there was one. The last time states seceded from the union we had a war . . . the worst one in terms of US casualties the we have ever experienced (20th century military tech be damned) in our entire history. These are the people who helped give Palin her start in politics when she first ran for city council. Apparently the McCain camp did not completely vet her on these topics as they are clearly caught off guard. -Mo
Members of 'Fringe' Alaskan Independence Party Say Palin Was a Member in 90s; McCain Camp Denies Charge*

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.
And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."
After refraining from commenting on the charge for a day, the McCain campaign on Tuesday asserted that Palin was never a member of the AIP.
But Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.
"We are a state's rights party," says Clark, a self-employed goldminer. The AIP has "a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law."

Just a little update, it seems that with the backtracking of Alaskan Independent Party sources, plus evidence that Sarah Palin has been registered as a Republican since 1982 has the McCain camp now claiming Democratic smear. I think, however, that the evidence is now stronger than ever that Sarah Palin was politically involved with AIP members when she was first elected to city government . . . municipal elections being conveniently non-partisan in Alaska (as they are in Texas), it was no big deal at that time to be actively working with them, even while registered as a Republican.
These secessionists are crazy nut-jobs (as they are in any place in the union -- we've got our share here). And the fact that her husband has been verified as a member now, gives me no real comfort in Palin's national allegience. One would assume that Mr. Palin is going to be living in Washington DC with his wife. Sarah Palin has obviously been attending every AIP convention in some form or fasion including 2008 (when she appeared via supportive video). No wonder the party bosses just naturally seemed to assume that Sarah was one of their own. She was probably attending more AIP conventions than GOP ones regardless of her registration. She WANTED them to think she was one of their own, and actively courted them in such a manner.
You may have noticed in some of her pre-selection media interviews that in addition to not being familiar with what the VP does, she expressed grave concerns about how her getting that could help ALASKA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pak-rH0dCeA
Now of course as governor one might understand playing to state sympathies, but its not like anyone is going to seriously challenge her for governorship whether McCain wins or loses; and of course any decent contextual reading of her response would seem to indicate that the question was about her qualifications for NATIONAL office, not whether she could bring home more bacon to the Great Nation of Alaska. And yet thats exactly how she answered the question! She's immersed in this crazy Alaskan version of white red-neck confederate-flag waving, right wing creationist nut jobs, and her family will be bringing a lot of that culture to the White House should John McCain win. Indeed, the oval office itself should he win and die too soon.
