Subject: Dawkins book
We had a great visit to Iceland! The local atheists and humanists had
their first national conference.
Richard Dawkins was there, as well as Julia Sweeney, and other good
speakers. I gave my regular personal talk about losing faith and Annie
Laurie talked about women and religion.
At the end of the conference, Dawkins gave me a proof copy of his new
book, The God Delusion. It is wonderful! It is everything we
anti-theists could ever hope for in a book, hitting all of the
traditional arguments, plus ID, in typical unapologetic Dawkins style.
Succint, powerful, building on his previous books about science, but
branching off into philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, theology (which he
calls the non-field of theology), comparative religion, and even some
bible criticism (including the Matthew/Luke birth narrative
discrepancies). In the introduction, he announces that his intention is
that this book be picked up by a believer and put down by an atheist.
Because of Dawkins' stature and and notoreity, I feel certain that this
new book will be a milestone for atheism. I told Dawkins that this book
could change the world. "I hope so," he said.
