In case any of you missed this in the regular news: I think Dr. Barry Marshall, one of the pair of winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine deserves special Church of Virus attention for his vituous act in behalf of science.  For most of our purposes and at the end of the ethical day there is usually no better lab animal than the human being.  Let's learn from this. -Jake
"Australian Scientists Awarded Nobel Prize for Revolutionary Ulcer Treatment"
http://www.voanews.com/english/2005-10-04-voa13.cfm
excerpt: Most medical professionals believed that bacteria could not survive, let alone cause disease, in the acidic conditions of the stomach.
To prove the doubters wrong, another member of the research team, Dr. Barry Marshall, swallowed a glassful of the bacteria.
Several days later he became violently ill with acute gastritis.
Dr. Marshall says the discomfort was worth it.
