I wanted to get an idea on what some of you make of the Star Wars phenomenan.  Tell us about your experiences - the first time you saw any of the episodes, what you like about it, what you dislike about it,  action figures/toys you collected, what your thoughts are on Lucas' storytelling, do you think there will be the 3rd trilogy as was reported back in the late 70's in Time Magazine, anything.

Here are a few links to things that I've come across, including some funny clips from way back when:

The very first movie I saw was ET.
I have memories of watching The
Emprire Strikes Back and Return of
the Jedi at the drive in.

Why?

Surely there were other films that I
might have (and did) watch.  Somehow,
Splash is an early memory.  But it is SF,
not Fantasy, that stuck to me.  Black Hole,
Buck Rogers, Star Trek and the topic of
this thread.

Why?

Because.

I saw Star Wars 12 times in the theater in the first couple years (77-79) and probably another half dozen times since. Now that I think about it I've watched the movie more often than any other, though my favourite of the series after seeing all six is still episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

One of the things that I like about latest star wars is the duality between the jedi and the sith, compared to the differences between a republic and an empire. The power of the Jedi comes from all around, similar to the power of a republic. But the power of the Sith comes from within the individual, from the hate and emotions within reaching out. Simarly the republic finds its support from all around, from the collection of individuals. The Empire rather collects individuals. Neither can keep the other from ever completely overcoming the other, rather they cycle. A strong individual such as the Emperor can gain control once in a while, but the tighter holds onto his domain the more slips through his fingers.

Oh and does anyone else wonder why the Jedi prophesize that the one will destroy the sith and bring balance to the force, yet not foresee that in order for balance to be kept if the sith are destroyed the jedi will also have to be destroyed? yeah... so he kills em both.

The distinction between sith and jedi, empire and republic, I find very similar also the the difference between inductice and deductive logic, and between science and religion. And we live somewhere inbetween the resonance.
