Karen Armstrong's reminder that in reality it is 'Religion/Nationalism/Human Nature' combined that underwrite the atrocities promulgated by our species. Near the end she unpacks ISIS as a military organization that is in fact not religious, contrary to western propaganda.

Conventional wisdom says that religion, and religious difference, beget violence. Karen Armstrong, author of "Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence," says that humans can perpetuate violence quite easily on their own, without religion. She joins The Agenda for a discussion of her ideas.

Contrary to western propaganda? Are you kidding? It takes a special kind of arrogance to ignore everything that ISIS publishes about its motivation and declare that they don't know what they're talking about. I guess that is why Armstrong is included in the "regressive left".

ISIS propaganda, Western Media Propaganda, Government Propaganda, misinformation from the 'right' or the 'left'.
ISIS is begat / created and is a big chunk of the IRAQ military that was trained and armed by the west, then struck out on it's own to build a nation state for with all the subscribed power glory and propaganda their religious rhetoric is divisive and in no way are they devote or religious; just power hungry swine like every other nation state in the world. ISIS's method and military acumen is a testament to the west's methodologies and proscribed actions to build nation states for the power, resources, and self serving interests.
Religion like Nation State and a belief in god, is all the same faith entrenched evil that will be our demise.
I see no fundamental difference in any country or religion once it is co-opted by humans seeking power and control, which is in the end all of them equally for time immemorial.

The point that I am attempting to make is that there is a huge divide between those behind the curtain pulling the levers and the throngs of believers that make up the cannon fodder.
The voters in the western world do not run the countries they are part of any more then the brainwashed radicals do that fight for ISIS.
ISIS leaders and their interpretation of the religion are tools to an end being used by leaders looking for Power and Riches.
Without exception in any human conquest, Power and Riches are the driving force and everything else are trappings employed by those in charge to engage and hoodwink the rest to do their bidding; be it killing, stealing, or proselytizing.
The Religion is never the driver, rather it is the tool used by the psychopaths in charge. Christianity is a death cult just like Islam but has been polished to seem benign, polished or not it too is still a stinking turd.
Disconnect Faith from people actions, because actions are genetically driven, only then can we talk usefully about plethora of psychopathic gangsters manipulating us and taken us down roads of war and destruction.
The emotional brainwashing and poisoning of of children's minds has to stop, no more faith based indoctrination, but our societies are so polluted with Faith and manipulated by a few for Power and Riches that I see now hope for change.
