Pirate Ship Made Out Of Human Hair By John Brownlee June 18, 2007 | 10:16:38 AM
Few outside of a small group of the most erudite scholars of Caribbean Buccaneer Lore know the legend of the diminutive pirate Carlos "The Hair" Suté. Truly, there's not much to tell. A swarthy dwarf turned murderous pirate, he prowled the seas looking for ships to plunder, only to be turned upon by his crew and left on an uninhabited island. His sole claim to infamy is by using his own thick back hair to weave himself a tiny three foot long pirate ship, then enduring a grueling 3 week voyage back to civilization, during which time he was hounded at every turn by sea gulls attempting to tear apart his little ship for nesting materials.
As a tribute to his partial namesake, Florida artist Carlos Dimas recreated Suté's ship out of the same materials, provided by his day job at the "Hair by Carlos" salon in Fort Myers. "The base (of the ship) is wire just to give it some flexibility. The rest is just hair sort of glue and sprayed and glued sprayed with bobbie pins, hair pins, over and over and over." According to Dimas, he was prompted to build it when a documentary maker asked him to "make something artistic," where "art" is synonymous with "disgusting."
