Quantum Security Realised Posted by Tom Graham on 15 Sep 2004 - 23:52
Scientists at Harvard and Boston University with BBN Technologies have succeeded in created a working quantum network. The technology is especially useful for secure internet transactions.
It works by sending data in a way such that any attempt to alter the information, or even monitor it, will result in the data ending up at the destination un-mistakenly altered. Security administrators can thus respond to the issue, and resolve the problem. Currently, the system is working constantly on a three way network in Boston, thought to be the first of its kind.
The project is funded with $4 million of investment from DARPA, who has high hopes. BBN created the initial ARPANET which later became the internet. Researchers hope that with more investment and research, the technology could go main stream in the near future.

[Blunderov] Really Rhino and Walter's terrain... I think it has to do with the fact that, at quantum levels, the very act of observation changes the data. I suspect that this has something to do with 'the fundamental interconnectedness of all things' which, amongst other things, has great implications for law enforcement.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/0671746723.html
<snip>Dirk Gently is a private detective who is more interested in telekinesis, quantum mechanics and lunch than fiddling around with fingerprint powder, so his investigations tend to produce startling and unexpected results. A simple search for a missing cat uncovers a bewildered ghost, a secret time-traveller, and the devastating secret that lies behind the whole human history and threatens to bring it to a premature end. Sadly the cat dies. </snip>
[Blunderov] 'The fundamental interconnectedness of all things' is thrown into further sharp relief in:
The Long, Dark Tea-time of the Soul http://www.brainyencyclopedia.com/encyclopedia/t/th/the_long_dark_teatim e_of_the_soul.html
<snip>When one of Dirk's clients, who had retained him on the bizarre pretext that he was being stalked by a green-eyed monster with a scythe, is unexpectedly murdered by a green-eyed monster with a scythe, Dirk embarks on an investigation that involves exploding airport check-in counters, the gods of Norse mythology, a sinister nursing home, rhinophagic* eagles, the I Ching, and a God who sold his soul to a lawyer. </snip>
* Apparently nothing whatever to do with the well known Virian. "Several mites of the genus Rhinophagia infest the nasal cavities and sinuses of nonhuman primates and may cause nasal polyps" http://www.afip.org/vetpath/WSC/WSC94/94wsc11.htm
[Blunderov] Hope this helps. Best Regards.
