Zwan: The return of a great band. By: Matthew Hand (ElvenSage) 2-15-03
In the not so distant past many music fans felt asif something irreplacable was taken from the music industry. This was the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'Arcy, and Jimmy Chamberlin together created a unique sound that was unheard by the music industry.
Now that sound has taken center stange once again. Billy Corgan, and Jimmy Chamberlin return along with new friends to recreate the sound of the Pumpkins. These new friends include Paz, known for being in the rock band "A Perfect Circle." Now under a new name "Zwan," they have began to climb back to the top of the charts.
Zwans debut album, "Mary Star of the Sea," is well worth the dirty-dollar resting in your pocket. The album is much like the old Smashing Pumpkins work, with a spin to it. Immediately the contrast in sounds stand out. There is a lot of distortion and loud noise going on in most the songs, but it's done in such a way that it is very musical and pleasing to the ear. This combined with Billy Corgan's unique voice creates an atmosphere like no other modern band. Unlike Smashing Pumpkins though, the lyrics are not nearly as cryptic as Billy Corgans previous works. Most of the lyrics and music creates a warm feeling and atmosphere. This is a must buy album for anyone who enjoyed the works of the Smashing Pumpkins, or those who enjoy rock music that is more then just a bunch of power chords. So go out and buy the new Zwan album, and enjoy the orgy of sound that blasts out of your speakers!
"Baby lets rock!"
