Precaution: rational or irrational?

Is precaution rational or irrational?
Agnosticism (aka. agnostic atheism, "weak" atheism) is the most rational position to take regarding matters of religion and faith. If this is so, then the argument for theism becomes an argument for precautionary measures. If precaution is rational, then is theism as a precautionary measure also rational? Or is the process of precaution rational but not the measure?

I think its safe to say that taking precaution is rational. But it depends on what you want to get out of religion. If what you mean by precaution is something to the effect of worshipping a god so that you aren't sent to hell, then it seems that this is a rational precaution. But whether a rational individual will do this depends on their priorities and their view of religion. I find that many people believe that seeking truth is more important than looking out for yourself and your afterlife, and so their religious beliefs center around what they find to be the most rational. And for agnostics, who are unsure of what they perceive the truth to be, they don't commit to any certain religion or dogma because it would be more or less living a lie.

Skepticism doesn't always lead to taking weak positions on existential issues. Like I mentioned in the other thread, most adults are not agnostic about Mother Goose for perfectly rational reasons.
