For a lifeform to use all of its skills to keep itself alive and procreate is logical. But for a lifeform to use the same skills to push down any possible competitors discourages evolution. Thus we have a strong instinct, in addition to competitiveness, known as “fairness”.
Fairness in game requires generosity on the part of the winners, who could otherwise reign supreme without competition.
A balance between the two (competition and generosity) is optimal for development of the species.
