You don't have to make "sense" in music. Rational, logically secure, and
skeptical music would be very boring. However, he does make sense. He
mentions liberty, yes, but he does not say he is required to die. He
said "if dyin's asked of me" I'll die with honor. Otherwise, he'll live
as a soldier.

I think a song does have to make sense (not necessarily in a 'formal
logic' sense). It has to hit a chord. Although it is always subject to
scrutiny as to which chord it tries to hit.
For example, the following one does make much more sense to me that the
"I would die for liberty" thing in its particular context, and what's
more, it does not generate suspicions for trying to cash in quickly on
dirty politics.
(This is an offhand translation of a Greek song, although my skills in
that area suck.)
Bears
---------------------
The sky is raining bears,
raining bears descending like butterflies,
they are smiling and eating orange peels.
<snip>
And you, who are eating your icecream bored,
don't miss your chance
to fight against the beasts.
<snip>
Because when the bears eat all the orange peels
they will leave just as they came
like butterflies.
