Well Kasparov pulled it off! He got the program into a very blocked
position in which it could find no constructive moves. Kasparov won a
pawn then later sacrificed it back again but Fritz was already lost.
A great result by Kasparov although it was not a particularly hard game
for him to play.
The match now hinges on the result of game four which will be played on
Tuesday. The world number one may have a tough time of it with the black
pieces because he can not be certain of obtaining the sort of blocked
position in which programs are so prone to floundering.
His priority, as in his previous match with Deep Fritz, is likely to be
to avoid losing the match at all costs. It seems possible that he will
once again go in for a Berlin Defence to the Ruy Lopez but this time he
will be fully forewarned against the possible transposition to a King's
Indian Defence type of position.
Will the Fritz programmers have a surprise in store for him?
Budding conspiracy theorists may make what they will of the report on
ChessFM that the Chessbase offices were burgled very shortly before the
start of the match. According to the report, only software was removed
from the premises.
