Television
"I can't even stand to watch people in resturants laughing, having fun, enjoying life. Their pitiful happiness sickens me. And on TV, do people really live like this? Is this all a joke? Do we raise kids to believe in Baywatch, canned laughter, Jenny Jones? Stupid fish-white housewives straining their flabby legs together with Suzanne Summer's Thightmaster? She helped create the dumb blond stereotype and now she's a fucking infomercial folk hero hawking a worthless contraption that sounds like a porno movie or an Aerosmith song. Fuck blind consumerism. Stupid people deserve what they get. They'd buy shirts that say "I'm fucking stupid" if Cindy Crawford told them it was cool. I'd love to kill all of them, but I'd be doing them a favor. The worst punishment I can give them is to let them wake up every morning and lead their stupid fucking lives, let them raise their stupid fucking chrildren in their stupid fucking homes, and, of course, make a record called Antichrist Superstar, which will annoy and destroy e
ach any every one of them. Fuck you America. Fuck me. The world spreads it's legs for another fucking star..." - - , Marilyn Manson, 1996
[For the record I am not a fan of Marilyn Manson]
The masses? There are no masses, only individuals. Remember that in a democracy each and everyone of us are individuals, nobody is forced to do anything, democracy is about choice. But we still have masses, sheep who are so mindlessly dependant upon our capitalistic system, so dependant upon the order dictated to them that they would crumble away and die if forced to act on their own. Let us take a closer look: How is it possible to keep millions of people from thinking? Generally it is not, but in our case a special instrument makes sure that we do not: Television, every day we allow it to poison our minds with the filthy shit broadcasted.
Every day television eats away a little piece of our individuality, like a dark parasite it engulfs our brians and lets us know what we can not live without, what is fun and what is sad, what is heroic and what is cowardly.
The romans believed that in order to run an empire not plauged by revolts the people should be given two things: Acting and bread. The same holds true today only indstead of acting and bread we are given televisions and malls. It is all part of a grand plan to control the masses: A commercial guides the mindless consumer straight into one of the gigantic malls, here the consumer is exposed to pop-videos, neon light, televisions, plastic goods, and more televisions. It does not take long before the consumer is a zombie, moving through the mall repeating the mantra planed for him: "Must ... buy ... must ... buy ..."
But when everything is accomplished, then what? When we have everything we need to satisfy the urges created by our televisions? If this scenario occured our society would surely collapse because nobody would be in need of goods any more. What is to be done here? How do these merchants keep us in need? Have you not noticed their boldest slight of hand? -It is called fashion. It's most loyal followers are as beautiful as they are dependant. They need not be rich, those who are not simply prioritize their money in such a way that it is solely spent on clothing and jewlery. It is here that the finest trick of these merchants take it's toll: Those who are not consumed are mocked. The lay of the land has changed; it is now eat or be eaten.
Whilst the circle is not complete yet: When everybody ownes fashionable colthes, what is to be done then? How is this river of money generated by fashion kept from drying out? Another fine trick is employed here: As a snake sheds it's skin, the face of fashion is completly renewed each season. One needs not be especially clear-minded to understand the what this change brings...
So far I have mentioned commercials only breifly, but as they are the pillar upon which this system is resting, I will have to dissect the origins as well as present nature of commercials in order to present the strongest case possible: Commercials are everywhere, in fact commercials are such a common sight that most people fail to notice that the very object of their focus is a commerial!
Although commercials are everwhere, the main source of this curse is again television. The reason that television is the strongest medium for commercials is that television is a series of visual images combined with constant audio activity, whereas radio is solely audio devices and spots only make use of a single image. The constant psedo-reality of television makes for an intense bombardment of ideals, our independance is slowly weakened, our most private and intimate thoughts are bent back onto the 'right' track when faced with the pop-values of television, the images of television becomes a second reality, a source of which to measure ourselves against. The everyday standards become a sad reflection of television, what the men and women of television wear, say, do, and express, how they talk, behave, act and look becomes the foundation of our new ideals, the common ideals, the 'right' ideals...
